A book needed for today October 6, 2008 I have been a christian for about 25 years and have belonged to various denominations over that time, including AOG, Methodist, Anglican, House Church and now an Elim Pentecostal and have gained many insights in all of these churches, but never have I heard the message of grace explained in this way,(or maybe I just wasn't listening)! This book, in the words of a famous beer advert, reaches the parts that others have not. It has opened up parts of myself that I would never have looked at,such as how legalistic I am,( and me a pentecostal!) but for some reason the way this is written has drawn me in to explore grace in a frightening but liberating way, To open up to God's grace for myself and start to receive what He has for me, not just my own small ideas. I would like to be able to buy lots of copies of this book to give to people I know. Dianne
Brilliant Book January 12, 2008 This book is BRILLIANT. I wish I had found the time to read it years ago. As a committed Christian I found Yancey challenging me to reconsider many of my "evangelical assumptions". I was especially challenged regarding my attitude towards gay people and have followed this up by reading what other enlightened evangelicals have to say on the subject. Well done Yancey.
Something we all need to learn February 16, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
In 'What's So Amazing About Grace?', Philip explores grace at very much street level. If grace is God's love for the undeserving, what does it look like in action? How do we go about showing grace to those around us?
Yancey asks some difficult questions, tells some interesting stories (which are a little motherhood and apple pie at times) but also challenges us as readers as to how we outwork our faith day to day.
great book
Will change how you live your life September 30, 2006 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
This is my favourite book of all time- I have read it at least 8 times and each time come away with something new and feeling invigorated.
Yancy challenges the view that (sadly) many people have of Christians in the world- that is that we are legalistic and lack compassion and love. In this book, Yancy challenges Christians to really think (and more importantly ACT) in the manner that Jesus did.
The book is full of heart-breaking stories that challenge one's thinking. I don't think you can look at the world the same again after reading this.
A must read for all Christians!
(Anything by Yancy is tops on my list)
Good book August 30, 2004 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
This really is an eye-opening book and it WILL change the way you think and the way you approach sin your own life and in others. However, there has been a tendency in evangelical circles to treat this book as the 'definitive' book on Grace, which it is not. There are certain trains of thought which I do not agree with wholly, namely the suggestion that judgement of sin should be disregarded in favour of acceptance. That to me deviates too far away from scriptual teaching. That aside, this is a thoroughly good read. Everyone should read it at least once!
