A Great Novel That is Also Thought Provoking May 14, 2005 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
This is one of the best novels that I have ever read.
Alcorn not only wrote a great story, he also explored some important issues in the process. If you are looking for great Christian fiction, this would be a great place to start.
One issue that he really explores is what heaven is like. If you are one of the many who has thought that Heaven may be great, but you want it to be a long time before you ever leave this wonderful Earth to go there, this book will challenge you. Alcorn paints a picture of Heaven as such a beautiful and exciting place that it may actually create a yearning in you. He certainly doesn't view it as a boring place with non stop harp music being played like so many preachers and Christians seem to do.
Alcorn will give you some fresh viewpoints to ponder. I encourage you to buy this and enjoy!
An excellent, thought-provoking book May 12, 2005 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
Other reviewers have gone into details, so I don't need to, but this is truly an excellent book that gives everyone food for thought. I like its uniqueness; it's not just "another Christian novel." It's different; it gives us a glimpse of what heaven will be like (this author has studied the subject of heaven so thoroughly for so long that he even wrote a nonfiction book called "Heaven," which I just ordered). "Deadline" is fascinating and hard to put down. I've never bought into the clouds and harps images of heaven...and this book certainly doesn't either. I loved it; it was extremely well-written and thought-provoking. I love books that don't stay in the "box" and don't worry about political correctness. I will read more Randy Alcorn novels--I have "Safely Home" already and am looking forward to reading it. I'm even more eagerly anticipating his book "Heaven," which comes highly recommended. I know it will intrigue me, strengthen me, and be a great encouragement to me as a Christian, especially since I have health problems. After all, this life is so short in light of eternity. I highly recommend "Deadline"! Blessings!
I like to read alot....... March 2, 2005 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
and since becoming a christian, I have enjoyed reading christian fiction. Like all good art forms, you have your great, good, not so good, and awful. This is a great read. It is well written, with a good subject matter, with a serious underlying message to boot. I won't go in the synopsis(others have in their reviews) but this books comes highly reccomended. I would also recommend Dominion. Enjoy.
One of the Best Christian fiction books out there February 9, 2005 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I read this book a few years ago and I loved it. It is not a fun read, it isn't something you can just sit back and read without paying attention to every word being placed before you. It isn't a Tom Clancy book, it isn't a Dan Brown book, in fact, it is far superior to most if not all books out there now. The reason for that is because the book is brutally honest of how the liberal worldview clashes and slams the Christian worldview simply because the Christian worldview is not politically correct. That, in effect, is the heart of the novel. Yes there is a mystery. Yes it a character study of how and what people do...from relationships to school to home to church. But the book is much more. And that is where it counts the most.
In this day and age the liberal worldview persecutes and abuses the Christian worldview, in effect practicing Christianphobia, when it comes to issues such as homosexuality, abortion, marriage, and education. This book takes both sides of the coin and debates them through the mouths of the characters. We see an honest point of view of those on the left and those on the right, those who are of the world's worldview (postmodern, we're all god, can't judge anything except Christians, and choicers etc.) and those of the Christian worldview (one God, salvation through Christ, grace, prolife while being prowomen, caring for those who are gay while not agreeing to accept their lifestyle). We gain an appreciation toward what Christians believe while disecting the lies that the liberal left gives.
Now, of course the book doesn't present the Christians as pure "white hats" and liberals and the world's worldview as the "black hats". No, these are real people, real passions on both side, real reasons why the Christian view is superior not because Christian's are necessarily the good guys, but because life based upon a relationship with God through Christ and living for God's will and not our will. Christians are not right because they themselves are right, but because God is in the right through we humans having a living working relationship with God through Christ Jesus. It is about God, in the end, and the bond between we humans and God through Christ. It, as another writer says, isn't about us, it's about Him. And that is the ultimate message that hits home so hard and so wonderfully in this book.
One Of The BEST Fiction Books I Have Read February 6, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree with the reviewer that said this book is not for the politically correct, it isn't. This book does show some of the realities of our world however. The mystery plot was pretty easy to figure out but the depth of the other issues kept the book interesting. I appreciated someone talking about what the media is really like.
