Every Christian man should read January 16, 2007 I've read another book by Shaunti Feldhahn named "The Veritas Conflict" and I knew I had to read "The Lights of Tenth Street". Shaunti really captures the struggle of mens lust for woman and the state of pornography in this day and age which is so readily available. I could easily relate with the males in this book and the battles they were facing. Their trust in God made them triumphant in their daily battle with lust. I await more similar titles from Shaunti.
Page turner, attention keeper January 26, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I loved this book. It was interesting, well-written, thought provoking and it kept my attention at all times. I looked forward to the next time I could pick it up. I cared about the characters and it all tied together very nicely. RECOMMENDED.
A must read! August 16, 2005 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
The Lights of Tenth Street is a moving and captivating book with realistic, flawed characters and a story that illustrates the miraculous ways that God works in people's lives. The story focuses on a stripper with a heart of gold, but a rough past, a Christian family with a husband who's addicted to pornography, and high powered criminals plotting evil for their own financial gain. One of the things that I appreciated about the book is its honesty. The story humanized the consumers and employees in the pornography industry and illustrated how easily pornography can seep into and destroy people's lives. It also illustrated God's amazing love and the fact that Christians should embrace and love those caught up in a sinful lifestyle instead of judging them.
Great story, hard to put down, with a miraculous ending May 13, 2005 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I was given a copy of this book by a friend, and once I started it I couldn't put it down. The story follows a young woman who has the drive to get out of the small town, and abusive family life she is in. It tracks the marriage of a yuppie family, where the husband's behavior puts him in a situation where he can lose it all - his marriage, his job and his freedom. These paths will intersect in the most miraculous way.
The author does a great job of weaving what seem like independent plot lines together. There are several story lines, but the main two include one which follows a crime syndicate and a terrorist plot, and the other follows the lives, failures and redemption of the two lead characters.
The story is not only suspenseful but hits home. The depiction of how the husband continues to find himself in situations he can't seem to resist depicts the cycle of addiction with chilling clarity. The way that the little choices we make can lead to a place in life we couldn't have imagined we would find ourselves. In this regard often novels are more adept at communicating a message that resonates by creating situations that people can relate to and thus become more open to the message itself. This book is great in that regard.
Overall, I very much enjoyed the story, despite the fact that the ending is miraculous and at times a bit too convenient. The reader will discover a powerful message and a book that hooks you into the action and is hard to put down. Everything you expect from a good novel.
Close to perfect April 23, 2005 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book is wonderful. Shaunti molds the subjects of prostitution and sexual addictions with incredible compassion. She doesn't demonize either the women or men involved, but instead shows their brokeness and Satan's torture of them. Beautiful book
