5 out of 5 stars Incredibly encouraging!   July 7, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

I have read the entire book and then re-read several sections as needed for reference. As a 31-year old female, I found the insights Dr. Lewis shared to be incredibly encouraging and life-breathing. He provides some very simple, straight-forward insights into the role of women in the world today, and although some of them are hard truths to read, it was what I needed to hear. I have given copies of this book to several of my friends who are in the same season of life as me, and they have also found the truths shared in this book to be encouraging, challenging and worth their time to think about. I highly recommend buying and reading this book to anyone female who is looking to choose God's best for their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Women of All Ages and in All Life Stages   July 3, 2008

This book is an incredible guide for ALL women in ALL seasons of life. Contrary to what another reviewer wrote this book does NOT put women in a "Biblical box" or relay in any way that happiness comes only from "leaving your career and bearing children." There are more than a few examples of successful career women with kids as well as single or single-again women living according to God's "core callings" and loving life! The author encourages women to explore the freedoms we enjoy in the 21st century (with some boundaries :)), develop our strengths and use them accordingly. I believe this book "liberates" women to be who God created them to be and feel no regrets with decisions made about the direction in their life if they veiw them through an "inside out" perspective. This book is a must read and great for small group studies. A+++

1 out of 5 stars Be careful with the information in this book...   June 29, 2008

If only the last chapter's theme been representative of the entire work, I could probably support this book. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case.

The author fails in the same way many Christian churches have-by not encouraging both young women and men to be content in their singleness even if they desire to be married.

He takes great liberties pronouncing his philosophies, worldviews, and "core callings" both Biblical and the same for every woman, and makes some erroneous statements that are not supported by Scripture.

The author is trying to encourage women to wisely plan their lives-something hard to argue against. But while he manages to include some good advice, the overall theme of this book doesn't appear to support surrendering our plans to the Lord, but rather chasing after what the author believes is God's plan for all women.

I fear for young women in high school and college who may get their hands on this and read it thinking that they should be pining away for a husband in their early twenties, and that they should have life planned out in detail at a very young age. There are defined "life stages" laid out in this book that simply don't apply to every woman.

If you read this book, read it with prayer and great discernment, and remember that it is God who is the ultimate planner of our lives; not us, and not Mr. Lewis.

1 out of 5 stars This book is horrible.   June 22, 2008

This book is misleading and I believe it construes biblical teachings to make it seem like women are supposed to leave their careers and bear children. That these things are our "core callings" as women. I don't believe you can generalize God's calling in your life. I agree that we are to live from the inside out, but I also believe praying for clarity on God's calling for our lives would be more beneficial than feeling like if we are pursuing a career or not having kids we are not following Christ AND that we will end up miserable. I do not think this book is healthy for women to read.

1 out of 5 stars A book for fundamentalists only   May 7, 2008
3 out of 11 found this review helpful

This book presents incorrect teachings. The author is viewing the Bible through the lenses of his fundamentalist culture when he says that Adam was Eve's leader and that when she bit from the apple, she assumed the lead and therefore humanity fell. The author has read quite a bit into these verses that simply isn't there. How many people have rejected Christ because of this book? For a more healthy and true Christ-like view of gender and marriage, see Faith Tango by Craig and Carolyn Williard and As For Me and My House by Walter Wangerin, Jr.
