5 out of 5 stars Five-Star Reviews from national TV networks & Lincoln scholars   January 25, 2006
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

A splendid achievement! Black Easter is a fresh and engaging look at the greatest murder in American History. It should sweep all earlier films on the assassination from the shelves.
- TIME-LIFE Books

Anyone who wants to learn more about the assassination should watch this film...it would do more than most books to help students of all ages understand and remember one of the greatest tragedies in American history.
- Civil War Times Illustrated Magazine

It is impossible to look at Black Easter without experiencing apowerful mixture of awe and sadness. It's fascinating, disturbing and utterly unforgettable!
- TURNER NETWORK TELEVISION

Black Easter sets a new high standard for documentary presentation. The focus is always on the living Abraham Lincoln -- his humble origins, his career in Illinois, his great accomplishments, his inspiring words. Motifs of cold rain and Good Friday envelop the long night of Lincoln's ebb. The moment of Lincoln's death is especially movingly portrayed, visually and musically.
- Paul H. Verduin, Editor, The Lincolnian

One of the most remarkable features of this documentary is that so much information could be packed into a film of only fifty minutes duration ... as the camera explores the Lincoln Memorial we see Lincoln in his modern context, "sitting there, like the conscience of the nation," and his place in history is eloquently described.
- Frederick Hatch, Editor, Journal of the Lincoln Assassination

A Masterpiece! Highly entertaining, emotional and riveting.
- Gary Gerberg, Creator & Producer of "COPS"

Here is a truly professional production -- from a literate script to fine photography to great sound effects to beautiful original music...Dr. Hanchett tells a straight forward assassination story preceded by information on the causes of the Civil War and followed with an appreciation of Lincoln's continuing influence in American and world history...Especially interesting is the footage made at Ford's Theatre. In one long continuous shot, reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock's technique, the camera moves up the stairs, around the back of the dress circle and toward the box, simulating Booth's path taken that tragic night. Behind the narration one hears the actor's lines and the audience's laughter...In a very unique manner, black & white photos of the 1860's turn into color shots of the 1990's to show Ford's Theater, the Peterson House, Lincoln's Home, and Lincoln's Tomb, ending magnificently at the Lincoln Memorial. Hanchett and Beebe can be proud of this one. It will be shown again and again for a very long time to come.
- Gary R. Planck, Literary Editor, The Lincoln Herald

ABC Television Network has recommended Black Easter for the Educational Clearinghouse for Children's Television & Radio.
- ABC Television Community Relations

A classic rendition! A superb spine-tingling documentary.
- John C. Brennan, Lincoln assassination scholar

Brilliant, insightful and revealing! Lincoln is more real than ever seen this century! Lincoln authority William Hanchett and director Gary L. Beebe bring history to life, and life to history.
- PBS Television

2 out of 5 stars Strictly for the novice   April 9, 2005

Serious scholars of the Lincoln Assassination should pass this one up. It's strictly for the novice student. Some of the major personna are glossed over, or in some cases, not even mentioned.
(Dr. Samuel Mudd for one) A good portion of the tape covers the monuments to Lincoln, which doesn't add to the story of the murder. I was pleased to see some of the goofy conspiracy theories de-bunked, including the one claiming that the Vatican wanted Lincoln dead. Or that Stanton hatched the whole thing and had to scramble to cover it all up. Sounds like some of that mindless dribble on "Coast to Coast" with George Norri. Lincoln will continue to fascinate us and as Stanton said when the 16th president died on the morning of April 15, "..... he belongs to the ages"
