What's Your Excuse? January 5, 2009 President George W. Bush is a book lover. Besides reading through the Bible each year, along with a daily devotional reading, the President read 95 books in 2006. He finished 51 books in 2007 and read at least 40 in 2008. Karl Rove, former senior adviser and deputy chief of staff to President Bush, reported all of this in a Wall Street Journal column on Dec. 26, 2008. Rove and the President had a little reading contest going over the years. Rove won each year (his top mark was 110 books in 2006). Amazing.
So do you have time to "prime the pump" spiritually every day? Rove said Bush would have done more reading, but he lost the contest "because he'd been busy as Leader of the Free World." What's your excuse?
What books will you read this year? And how many? For starters on your Bible reading/devotional times, you will enjoy the unique format of Solo, a Scripture selection from The Message on one page and a Read/Think/Pray/Live brief commentary on the second page.
"The devotions found in Solo are based on the classical method of lectio divina: reading, thinking, praying and living Scripture with the intention of inviting an infinite, omniscient God into your life--as it is, no gloss, no veneer. Lectio divina is more Bible basking than Bible study," say the authors.
This is my pick for this year. Basking sounds good.
Excellent Devotional December 16, 2008 So far this has been a tremendous help, as having read through the bible many times over the past 15 years, I often feel I don't know where to begin anymore. It definitely takes a bit of submission and commitment, since I would normally not study this way, but I am enjoying the change and direction.
A Quality Devotional November 23, 2008 I have thoroughly enjoyed this devotional book. Using the text of The Message, Eugene Peterson guides us through the Bible, using select texts and a technique that modern Scripture readers aren't too familiar with. I have been inspired, convicted and encouraged by the devotions in this book. While The Message is not my favorite translation, I applaud Mr. Peterson for this book. He worked hard and produced a very good tool for devotions.
This will bring you closer to God! November 16, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this book! It's called me to examine scripture more closely in language I can easily understand.
The Best! September 9, 2008 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the best devotional I have ever used. It is very contemplative and simple. Eugene Peterson draws yu into the scripture like no other devotional. I recommend it without reservation.
