Product Description
The New York Times is dedicated to providing news coverage of exceptional depth and breadth, as well as opinion that is thoughtful and stimulating. Widely quoted, and often hotly debated, The New York Times is held by its readers to the highest of standards and continues to be regarded by many as the nation's pre-eminent newspaper. The New York Times has earned an unprecedented 94 Pulitzer Prizes, far more than any other newspaper. A global news staff covers a wide range of interests: from world, national and New York issues to business, culture, science, religion, travel, style, food, sports, health and home. In addition to outside contributors, the editorials page features The New York Times' own team of award-winning columnists: David Brooks, Maureen Dowd, Thomas L. Friedman, Bob Herbert, Nicholas D. Kristof, Paul Krugman, Frank Rich and John Tierney.

The Kindle Edition of The New York Times contains articles found in the print edition, but will not include some images and tables. Also, some features such as the crossword puzzle, box scores and classifieds are not currently available. For your convenience, issues are automatically delivered wirelessly to your Kindle so you can read them each morning.

1 out of 5 stars How do I unsubscribe?   December 14, 2008
0 out of 5 found this review helpful

I subscribed to this on the kindle/ but there is no way to unsubscribe from the kindle? while I try to figure this out i am still getting charged for it? ifyou can subscribe and be charged from the kindle, you should also be able to stop the subscription and charge from the kindle as well without being held hostage to the billing.
For what this provides, I am better off reading this paper onthe iphone app or omline for free

3 out of 5 stars Why I Cancelled My Subscription to a Great Paper   December 9, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

This review is solely of the Kindle edition of the New York Times. Despite some stumbles over the years (Jayson Blair) the Times remains a 5 star newspaper.

So in the hopes of helping others decide if the New York Times is a good idea on the Kindle, here's the good and the bad.

The Good:
* Wireless delivery each morning, early enough that by the time you wake up, the paper's waiting for you.
* User-friendly formatting makes it easy to decide how you want to read the paper. You get the article title and the first few lines to decide what to read. You can jump to a section, the front page, or do what I did, just scroll through all articles and read as you go along. The Kindle's back button makes it easy to jump back to the articles list.
* I had no problem with the pictures and the lack of other images. I understand why others do, but I don't find that the images add much to reading the Times in-depth reporting.

The bad:

* On more than one occasion, my paper was late or didn't deliver until I went and retrieved it. This may seem like a minor issue - it only takes a few minutes to go into the Kindle content manager and send the paper to Kindle from the Amazon site. But if you're paying this much for an electronic version, you ought to get all conveniences.
* The price. This was the real deal breaker. I can go to the Times' website, click on "Today's Paper," and get the exact same list of articles for the Kindle for free. I'm always around a computer, so this isn't much of a problem for me. However, if the time comes when I'm not always around a computer, I would revisit a Times subscription - the Kindle makes it very convenient.
* No bang for your buck. On top of the expense, you don't get anything but the paper. Amazon should make arrangements with the Times to get every Kindle subscriber a free subscription or access to the online crossword puzzles. Right now the Times charges a fee to access this; Kindle subscribers are paying enough they ought to have access to these online features.

If Amazon and the Times lower the price, or throw in some additional benefits for being a subscriber, I'd reconsider my decision to cancel. Or, if I find myself without a computer more frequently, I'd also reconsider. It's a great paper and a great service, but ultimately not worth the dollar amount.

5 out of 5 stars 35 years reading paper format, several years online, 1 month Kindle: Kindle by far best format for my needs   November 22, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

After reading the NYT in its paper format for over 35 years, and for several years online via the computer, I wasn't sure how I would like it via the Kindle.

After a month reading it on my Kindle, I will never go back to paper. Two reasons. First, in every location where I read the paper, the Kindle is the most user-friendly medium. On the subway: As a subway commuter in Washington it was common that the cars were so packed that I could not even turn the page of the paper version. So, I would stand for 30 minutes looking at the front page. Not a problem on the Kindle. At home: whatever position (laying down, standing up, getting dinner ready, etc.) holding and reading the Kindle is always comfortable.

Second, while I always seemed to miss an article in the paper format, I never do with the Kindle version - - all the articles are listed. The key (and maybe this should have been obvious if I had read the Kindle user guide) is to start with "Go to Articles List" and then use the "Back" button to quickly get back to the articles list after you are done reading the current article.

No more missing that article hiding on the bottom of the page in the middle of the section. I also subscribe to the update service, which is a great companion to this subscription.

NOTE: I don't do crosswords, so while some have complained that this is missing, not a problem for me. Others have complained about delivery issues. Not a problem for me - getting the paper version on time every day - that was a different story. Photos - yes these are generally missing from the Kindle version, but I don't really miss them. In terms of price, as some have noted it is not as cheap as other papers. Have folks priced a subscription to the paper format recently?
