Amazon.com Review Readers who have either found the Bible to be an intimidating proposition or who are so familiar with it that the words have lost their meaning will discover that Eugene Peterson's The Message: The Bible in Contemporary Language is a welcome way to read and reread one of the best-loved books of all time. It's directly translated from the Greek and Hebrew texts and is intentionally designed to be a reading Bible rather than a study Bible. Each of the 66 books has an introduction by Peterson, and there are no verse numbers to interrupt the flow of the passages. The vibrant flavor of the text is evident from the opening verses of the book of Genesis: "First this: God created the Heavens and Earth--all you see; all you don't see. Earth was a soup of nothingness, a bottomless emptiness, an inky blackness." There's renewed vigor in some of Jesus' most well-known words of the New Testament in John 3: "This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again." Whether it's the poetry of the Psalms, the thundering tirades of the Old Testament prophets, or the ageless words of Jesus, Peterson breaths new life into timeless passages in this fresh-voiced paraphrase. --Cindy Crosby

Inspiring Book January 7, 2009 "The Message" is a version of the Bible written in terms used today. It's much easier to understand than the original version and my family finds it inspiring!
Message Bible January 6, 2009 I was a little sceptical at first because the price was so great but the Bible truly is like new. The shipper mailed it right away and I had it within a few days of my purchase. I would definitely use Amazon.com again and highly recommmend it for anyone else wanting a fantastic deal.
The Message December 13, 2008 This is an excellent way to get a clearer understanding of scripture while still staying true to God's word. Good book to buy as a gift also.
Great King James Backup December 1, 2008 As a reader of the King James I sometimes find it hard to really understand the scripture; by going to the Message Bible I can read the scriptures in todays language that gives me a clearer picture of what the scripture means. One of the many good backups to the King James. I among many wish the print was a little larger.
I Prefer the non numbered version, but still great!!!!! December 1, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
The Message: The Bible In Contemporary Language, Large Print Numbered Edition I love "The Message Bible" I do prefer the original none numbered version, because it showed that it wasn't made as a study Bible. The Message Bible Version is Great, enjoyably, and educational. but not Really made as a study bible. But instead is written in such a way that it draws great word pictures, it was made for explaining the bible in a more fun and leisurely way, like enjoying the word of God in say, a Park setting, or on the beach and the like. the translation though does not go "off" on the meaning of the Bible. Defiantly one of my favorite versions, but for a study or apologetic version I would recommend the "New King James", "NIV" or the "Authorized King James" Versions.... The message is absolutely wonderful.... Blessings to you all, Mike Orton
