5 out of 5 stars Reinventing the Human   November 22, 2008

Michael Dowd's book is a powerful message about care of the Earth community. Standing on the shoulders of Thomas Berry and a score of others, he inspires us again with the big context and offers practical ways we humans can reinvent ourselves to do our vocation of care. "Thank God for Evolution" is not just another read but is a invitation to participate in the great work of our age. I recommend this book to every youth and adult who seeks to be profoundly educated.

4 out of 5 stars Mother of all books on creationism and evolution   November 18, 2008

A book that has three pages of promises to just about any possible religious, scientific and secular group, must have something to say. I have attended a lecture of Michael Dowd and watched the DVD of his introductory talk.
This is a passionate preacher for " God and evolution."
The book is interesting and I trust that all the scientific data is correct.
I would recommend the thoughts and challenges to any thinker of our time.
Not sure that everyone who might get into this book would be open to a change of mind set but give the man a chance and you could be very informed and certainly more open to both God in your life and the role your faith plays in the world events.
A mind set that takes in the whole of creation would be a very important concept for power people in the political sphere.

5 out of 5 stars Hope   November 6, 2008

This book is about hope. It is about putting the arguments between science and religion behind us. Science tells us how. Religion gives it meaning. Both are equally important. Knowledge does not rule out faith AND faith does not rule out knowledge. This book is about learning not just to tolerate our differences but to embrace them as the key to our survival. This book is about appreciating the sanctity of death as a natural, creative, and necessary part of life. Finally, this book is about living with integrity in the here and now and thereby making your life a positive force in the world.

What a joyful marriage of the theory of evolution and the Oneness of God expressed by Michael and many other in "The Great Story" told in Thank God For Evolution! Michael's book is eye opening for seeing the great picture of life on Planet Earth.

This is an excellent book for the person who wants to to better understand how scientific advances can be integrated with religious beliefs. Dowd effectively outlines the over-arching history of the cosmos, with proof of evolutionary progression to the present human form. He reviews the birth of religions across the world as a response to the human need to explain mysteries of the unknown. He refers liberally to scientists, philosophers, theologians, and agnostics to reflect different views. A book well worth reading for anyone who is seeking enlightenment!
