Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This ground-breaking work is by authors who learnt from the excesses of the Great Welsh Revival of 1904. The book's premise is that there are counterfeit spiritual manifestations as well as godly, and that the Christian can be deceived, affected and manipulated by demons. This book is thus on spiritual discernment, spiritual warfare, spiritual gifts and revival.

This is essential reading for every Christian, as the same things that are happening today at Toronto and Brownsville happened in 1904 in Wales. There is nothing new under the sun. However, Jessie Penn-Lewis and Evan Roberts write that they learned many of these spiritual manifestations are NOT FROM GOD.

"The Hour of Revival is a time of crisis and few go through it without deception by the enemy. Bluntly, the Revival Hour is the occasion for evil spirits to fool the most spiritual believers into becoming deceived & possessed by evil spirits in their outer being through unwittingly accepting Satans counterfeits. The aftermath of the Revival in Wales, which was a true work of God, revealed many honest souls swept off their feet by evil supernatural powers. This is a glimpse into the mixed manifestations which have come upon the Church, as where revival has broken forth, within a very brief period of time the counterfeit stream has mingled with the true; and true and false have been accepted together."

4 out of 5 stars Our real enemies   May 30, 2008
2 out of 2 found this review helpful

Although a dense book, as much in typography as in content, the book is a must read. There is a wealth of vital information in its pages. Obviously not an easy bed-read, but all Christian readers should read it to know how our enemy works to deceive his most valuable rivals. You'll have to put your elbows on the table and get your pencil ready to underline. It's a whole spiritual world that is working right next to us, and against us. Sound advice:

"deceiving spirits are obliged to get the consent of the man's will before they can enter, and as to how far they enter. This they do by counterfeit and deception. They can only obtain the believer's surrender to their power, by feigning to be God."

"it is never safe in any case to feel God's presence with the physical senses", even Paul in `trance' (Acts 22:18) had full possession of his faculties, and intelligent use of mind and tongue.

It does away with misconceptions like thinking that men of God can be used by God as automatons, to speak or act thru them. Man never looses his free will. It is passiveness and the suspension of their mental activities that clears the ground for the evil spirits to make their presence.

Here's a terrifying passage: "the man having an exaggerated sense of importance in the Church ... which makes him feel he has been placed far above other men. But a tremendous and inevitable fall awaits such a one.

"He ascends his pinnacle, pushed by the enemy, without any power whatsoever to control the inevitable descent, which must follow when he is undeceived, a crash being the result, shaking the things that can be shaken. Then he experiences awful darkness, and the effects of possession in its true results. The effect of demon possession in its fullest climax is darkness; nothing but darkness; darkness within; darkness without; intense darkness; darkness over the past; darkness enveloping the future. Darkness surrounding God and all His ways.

"Here many sink under the horror that they have committed the 'unpardonable sin'. Some, however, discover that their bitter experience may be turned into light for the Church in its fight with sin and Satan, and as thos who have been in the camp of the enemy and heard all his secrets, they become a terror to the forces of evil on their emergence to liberty, with the result that they are assailed with intensified malignity on account of their knowledge of the foe."

There are a little too many generalizations. Some examples of real life cases could have made the point a lot better than much theorizing. It makes it sound like a lecture. But no denying its importance. This is the real battle. These are our foes, spiritual foes. Those who consider themselves Christians had better not dismiss this chance to secure their sanity and well-being.

5 out of 5 stars This War is Real   September 19, 2006

Soon after I returned to Christian faith in 1970 during the revival called the Jesus Movement, I was approached by a spirit who put into my mind the thought, "This is Jesus," along with a sensuous feeling of "love." The Holy Spirit put a question into my mind about whether or not this was Jesus, but the combination of that sensation of love and of the felt spiritual presence of "Jesus" seemed too sweet to refuse. I was deceived and became involved in a form of "bridal mysticism" for about 6 months.

But since I remained undeceived about the basic truths of the Christian faith that Jesus is God and that his blood atonement is the only way to the Father, the spirit(s) I was receiving into my body finally turned on me, and I began to experience overwhelming anxiety and panic attacks. Although the many spirits that occupied my body were never able to control me because I was still following Jesus in a good church, I was very fearful that I might fall under their control. The battle to come back to a normal emotional tone and use of my mind took months, even years. And I still suffer some adverse effects from my sinful folly in receiving those deceiving spirits despite the Holy Spirit's gentle warning.

"War on the Saints" describes my experience as only one of a variety of impersonations and deceptions used by demons to deceive spiritual Christians. The great value of this book is its authoritative warning of the unpleasant reality that demons can offer Christians counterfeit spiritual experiences, which, if accepted, can result in demonization, that is, various degrees of occupation of the body and control of the mind. Thus, it blows the cover on the many different forms of demonic deception designed to mislead mature believers.

In addition, Penn-Lewis tells how to discern the work of the Holy Spirit from that of deceiving spirits, stressing the principle that Satan requires passivity of mind, body, and spirit for his work in contrast with the Spirit who enlists the active cooperation of every human faculty in his work. The book is nothing if not thorough in its coverage of the varieties of demonic deception and of the dangers of passivity. Indeed, the major defect of the book is its length and repetitiveness.

But another virtue of the book is its instruction in how Christians who have passively followed false guidance can begin to use their spirits, minds, and wills to actively resist the devil and reclaim the health and use of their bodies, souls, and spirits. Thus, the book offers therapy as well as a needed caution for those who want to avoid spiritual deception.

I have read both unabridged and abridged versions, and I don't see much difference besides length. I would recommend either.

3 out of 5 stars Not terribly impressed.   December 19, 2005

I guess it depends on what you are looking for and how much other, similar, material you have read as to how you would value this book. I have read many books on the topic of demons, as well as listened to many tapes available on the subject. To me the book was interesting, but not terribly impressive. Again, some might find it helpful, however, depending on their particular needs. The author has her interesting opinions, but I would say don't consider her to be infallible, or even comprehensive.

5 out of 5 stars At last! The true unabridged version!!!   June 1, 2005

This book is spiritual dynamite...no wonder Satan has tried to suppress this book's truth over the last eighty years or so by getting other publishers to water down its meaning completely with their 'abridged' versions.

This book I would view as essential reading for every Christian in these times, when deception and false teaching abound within the Body of Christ. Where, oh, where has the Spirit of discernment gone?

These authors are NOT anti-gifts of the Spirit people (anything but)- however they do urge the need for spititual discernment. It is good to get a book urging caution on gifts that is NOT written by people from the camp who state 'gifts ended with the end of the apostolic age/canonization of the Bible...therefore all spiritual manifestations are wrong' type brigade.

I personally have heard many of the teachers connected with what was formerly known as the Toronto Airport Vineyard say 'This stuff (talking about the bizarre spiritual manifestations of the last decade) happenned in the Welsh Revival...' inferring that Evan Roberts (the 'leader' of the revival) agreed with it so it must be OK and from God. Reading this, however, shows this is plainly not the truth....

However, this book is not just about revival and spiritual manifestations. It is also about the general workings of evil spirits on the mind, the body, and the soul..and on the body of Christ.

You will possibly not agree with everything this book says. That is healthy. I don't either. Hey, it will sure make you think though...and if it makes you think and check yourself a little more before accepting prophecy/tongues/healings/manifestations as being of God, it will have done its job.
