Product Description
Hope Jensen is a young, single woman and an aspiring newspaper writer, and when she receives a much-needed but anonymous Christmas gift, she's determined to find her benefactor. That search leads her to an unusual family with a longstanding Christmas tradition. Sensing a front-page feature article, Hope desperately wants to publish their story, but doing so would be a breach of trust. What she decides to do will change her life forever.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Sentimental Story ...   December 31, 2008
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I love Christmas and I love the meaning of Christmas, but I will admit that I find it disturbing that the only time we're encouraged to practice charity is only for one season of the year ... when there are 364 days a year people need the love and help ... no matter their circumstances. Fortunately, this book does have that idea floating behind the story.

This book starts out with an abandoned baby taken in by a single woman who finds her. She raises the baby with love and hope ... and Hope celebrates her 26th birthday alone at her mom's favorite restaurant ... her mom had died the year before of cancer. Coming home, she finds her house ransacked and burgaralized. However, she stumbles on a Christmas Jar filled with coins and dollar bills. Since she is a writer and editor of the local newspaper, she decided to put her reporting sleuth to work and discover the story behind the generous gift. What she discovers is a priceless story and more.

The story begins with a newly-wed couple who didn't have any money for luxuries so they decided to put their change in the jar and buy each other presents from the jar. Every year, the tradition has been modified and grown to include their three daughters. One year, on the way to the bank, their daughter, Hannah, carrying the big jar of coins, sees a woman sitting in front of the bank crying her eyes out. Hannah just gave her the jar of money and thus, began the family gift-giving tradition. And it has grown immensely over the years.

It is a very heart-warming story and very predictable. The reason why I give it a four stars instead of a five is because the writing is very simple and the story has been told before. The story could have been embellished more to get more out of it. But that is just me. It is a very sweet story and hopefully, the profits have been given to a worthy charity ... so yes, I would buy this (with a discount) for friends and family. However, I am hoping the message of this novella goes on further than Christmas. Charity knows no season and people need the encouragement and help every day of the year, not just at Christmas-time.

4 out of 5 stars Woow - A book you won't want to put down   December 28, 2008
This book is a book that as you read it you will not want to put it down. It a very good book that will make you look at your life in a "I have to do this in my life kinda way" book. Its a easy reading book, enjoy it. I did and when your done pass it on to one of your friends or family members.

4 out of 5 stars Christmas Jars   December 27, 2008
A book should serve to inspire a person in some way: in how one thinks about a subject or even acts. This is a fictional story about a young woman's life journey through its twists and turns, trials and tribulations. It reveals to us the importance of family (however defined), of love, and of our own coming to terms with how we choose to live our lives. The truer meaning of Christmas is not in expensive gift giving but in the simpler gifts of sharing and caring symbolized by the simplicity of coins in a jar. It inspired me to begin my own Christmas Jars project and in doing so I felt the true JOY of the season.

5 out of 5 stars So touching & such a beautiful, timely story   December 24, 2008
This quick read was such a touching story! I found myself tearing up & just had to share it with several reading buddies before the holidays. I think all of us will start our own jars to share next year with a deserving soul.

2 out of 5 stars Book called "Christmas Jars."   December 23, 2008
Great book. I received it for Christmas last year and have given as a Christmas gift to several this year.
