5 out of 5 stars Very helpful to the average reader   January 7, 2009
The Apologetics Study Bible
Broadman & Holman Publishing

Immediately upon opening the Apologetics Study Bible (ASB) I was impressed. I like the quality of paper. I liked the presentation page. That was the least, however.
One does not go far into the ASB to find that it contains much material. There is an index of articles covering many issues such as the definition of apologetics, a chronology of the kings of Israel and Judah, the ethics of the Old Testament, the issue of the length of the Creation days, the transmission of the Bible, the canon of Scripture, the meaning of the term "worldview", and many, many more.
When one gets into the Scriptures he notices that there are notes and articles at important and controversial passages. One instance is in Genesis chapters 1 and 2. Much controversy attends the young earth vs. old earth issue. There is an article discussing this. There are also footnotes to various verses to help understand the meaning of various words such as Elohim that are difficult to bring over into English with their full range of meaning. It is nice to see that the ASB does not focus solely upon apologetics, but seeks to help the reader understand the Biblical text even where there is not an issue that faces an attack upon the veracity of Scripture.
In the New Testament I was especially interested to see what the contributors had to say about the resurrection of Jesus. I was not disappointed to find that there was a stand taken for the reality of the resurrection of Jesus. Not only was this gratifying, but I also was surprised and pleased to see a gracious stand against homosexuality and for Biblical truth concerning human sexuality. It was also nice to see higher criticism's attacks on the reliability of the New Testament addressed and the reliability of the NT sustained.
These are not the only things addressed, either. One can read about being assured of their salvation, the attitude of Scripture writers toward women, science and the Bible, the existence of God, war, logic, the relationship between the Bible and various religions, and much more. At critical points, too, there is what is called "Twisted Scripture." This is a response to various cultic misinterpretations of a particular text to further their own agendas.
All of these things will serve the reader well. While the HCSB may not be an enduring translation (Only time will tell, personally, I would have rather had this attached to the KJV or NKJV, but that is my opinion.), the ASB will find a ready home on the shelves of many Bible student, and many will profit from it.

4 out of 5 stars Defend your faith   January 4, 2009
The Apologetics Study Bible: Understand Why You Believe by Chuck Colson is a book that defends the divine origin and authority of Christianity. The book is interesting because it places one-hundred articles throughout the book about faith which I think adds weight to the rest of the book. It's a good education about ones faith that I think everyone could use.
There is a beautiful new book about God and faith entitled "The Enlightenment, What God Told Me After One Million Prayers: A Message for Everyone," by John H. Eagan. I just finished it. It's really great and deals with God, the creator, Jesus' teachings, and His Passion. It brought me to tears. I think the readers of Colson's book will really enjoy The Enlightenment.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Bible   December 12, 2008
The Apologetics Study Bible is a great tool for new Christians or any Christian who wants a deeper intellectual understanding to ground their faith. With articles from the world's top scholars, philosophers, and professors, this Bible has a wide range of resources for people who want to know they are grounding their faith in reason and not simply taking a leap. Worth much more than the price.

5 out of 5 stars Knowing Your Faith   December 12, 2008
