1 out of 5 stars Apparently God wants you to inflict pain on your babies   September 18, 2008

Apparently, this author hasn't read the New Testament and isn't familiar with terms like "forgiveness" and "tolerance." Basing his advice on the Old Testament (which also advocates stoning people to death, something one would have thought the coming of Jesus put paid to), this horrible example of a parent, Tripp, advocates inflicting pain on BABIES! We're talking about kids who can't walk and aren't really talking yet and this person thinks that if they "disobey" by struggling against a diaper change or stiffening when you want them to sit on your lap, they should have their bare bottoms hit hard enough to cause them to cry (poor colicky babies will apparently be beaten regularly, as they often stiffen due to discomfort). And then, if that isn't weird enough, you're supposed to hug them and if they don't sweeten right up but keep crying, you're to keep hitting them until they stop crying. Sounds like a recipe for a frustrated parent who is going to go over the top trying to beat a child into smiling. In the church I belonged to, we adhered to the New Testament, and considered the kinds of punishments meted out to children and adults (stoning, beating, etc.) in the Old Testament to have been washed away when the Jesus brought the new law of love and forgiveness. If you're into Old Testament living, this book is for you. If you are a child of Jesus, it's definitely not.

5 out of 5 stars highly recommened   August 30, 2008

I highly recommend this book to those parent who want to raise thier children in a godly home. The 'heart' is so important. This is a must for learning how to discipline your children. The section on spanking does seem a bit extreme, however.

I ordered the book as shown in the picture. However, I received an old edition without any notice.

5 out of 5 stars Great   March 27, 2008

WE received this book before our first child was born from my husband's parents and we have recommended this book over and over again. We actually have lent it out several times and are trying to get together with another couple to do a study together. My oldest is now 9 and we have two more ages 7 and almost 6. This book does a great job emphasizing the core responsibility of parenting - not just focusing on external good behavior but getting down to the heart issues that come out in our behaviors and helping our children realize that the most important thing is to be in a right relationship with God - all parents want their children to be happy and successful and happiness and success are found in a right relationship with God. The book has training principles and goals for different stages of childhood. I've read it several times and need to read it again as our children are reaching new phases of childhood and we're now dealing with more character issues. All of our parenting is to be based on Biblical principles and Ted Tripp does an excellent job of showing parents how to apply those principles in their parenting. A great book that gives you a lot to think about!

My pastor uses this book more than any other. He teaches the classes as well as counsels with it. It is excellent material.
