3 out of 5 stars I'm a Christian so I did get something out of it.   December 1, 2008
If I got anything out of this book it was as a Christian we all struggle with our faith, and it helped with getting out of that "funk." It also showed me that even pastors can struggle with their faith, which always seems unlikely to the congregation.

I thought this book was okay. I didn't really care for how it was written, but I'm sure most would disagree. I guess I expected something more. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it just didn't give me the "wow" factor. I struggled a little with getting through it and forced myself through the last couple chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book   November 30, 2008
I absolutely loved the book, 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN by Don Piper. The book was recommended by a co-worker, who is also a Christian. I am so glad that I read it. My mother passed away 2 years ago and my father preceded her 24 years prior. Also that when my time time comes, I will be reunited with them. This gives me a lot of hope, as I continue to go through the grieving process. I am convinced that they are together along with their siblings, aunts, uncles, parents who preceded them in death. This book was an easy read, I finished in maybe 3 hours. It was so inspiring and it shows what a Godly man Reverend Piper really is. Thank you again for this wonderful testimony.

3 out of 5 stars not what I expected   November 24, 2008
I did not realize I had ordered a book with only excerpts from the original. It's ok for what it is, but I had to purchase the whole book too, which is what I wanted.

5 out of 5 stars Could not put it down!   November 24, 2008
Don Piper begins his book with a wreck that changed his life when his card is struck and he spends 90 minutes in heaven near Houston, TX. His story is engrossing. He takes you on the journey through his rehabilitation and how he helps others. His story is incredible and breathtaking. You hear about his 90 minute experience, but about all the medical rehab, and his families struggles, finally the skeptics he deals with in talking about his experience. He is a great writer, and very interesting. His story confirms my faith.

1 out of 5 stars Three Big Prolems with This...   November 23, 2008
One: Title is misleading... 6 pages background, 16 pages experience in heaven, 169 pages convalescing, dealing with the physical pain, and counseling others.

Two: As a devout Southern Baptist preacher (with aspirations of starting his own church) his view of heaven is 100% in line with his own belief system, complete with pearly gates and streets of gold. Don't expect to find anything about heaven here than what's in Don Piper's Bible.

Three: He is skeptical (p200) of every one else's near-death experience, sometimes merely because they don't align with his belief system and sometimes because they seemed to be "too similar", as if they should be different, but he is 100% convinced of his own. Talk about being parochial (or perhaps egotistical)! Trying to corner the market?

Another point: He has The Survivor's view of religion. Because many people prayed for him and he survived he KNOWS that prayer works. He doesn't ever consider the possibility that for every one of "hims" there may be 20 others who were prayed over just as fervently but subsequently died and are consequently not around to testify that prayer doesn't work. I'm aware of at least one scientific study that showed there was no correlation with getting better for patients who were prayed over but were unaware of it (eliminating the placebo effect) as compared with patients who were not prayed over.

The best part of the book, in my estimation, is Pastor Piper's relating how he learned he could do good by simply accepting the help of others. Sometimes it is just as blessed to graciously receive as to give.
