Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
is one of the oldest and greatest classics of Western spirituality. Until now the available translations have treated these writings as historical curiosities with little relevance to our contemporary situation. This new translation made from the hieroglyphs approaches this text as a profound spiritual document capable of speaking to us today.

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent, Magnificent Interpretation of a classic text   August 17, 2008

I purchased this book a while ago. This text is a poetic reinterpretation of the Book of the Dead. Wow. This is probably the most lyric translation of an ancient work I've ever read. The recent Mitchell translation of the Epic of Gilgamesh is the only other thing even in the ballpark.

Not only is this marvelously well-written, the theological-philosophical content is amazing and you can finally recognize it thanks to the style of the author. There are some profound things to meditate on in this book. This is probably the only text that "new age" types enjoy that I've ever really enjoyed, too.

Highly Recommended to lit buffs, persons with an interest in egypt, and those seeking a meditation text.

A final note. 2 different people have borrowed this book and never returned it. If that's not a testament to how good it is, I don't know what is. I'm online now buying my 3rd copy. The only other book I've lent out that's been stolen more is "A People's History of the World".

5 out of 5 stars Northeast African Wisdom   January 22, 2008

This is a beautiful translation of the Ancient African wisdom found in the nile valley. It shows how thoughtful, reflective, & simply gorgeous the African people were, not to mention the intellect in creating theses stories. You can read them over and over, getting something new out of them every time.

5 out of 5 stars Life after death in ancient Egypt   October 6, 2007

Ms. Ellis translates the components of what is known as the "Book of the Dead" with poetic zest. It is more a book of life after death, than of death. The scenes painted in this material are beautiful and haunting; the ideas uplifting. In spite of references to historic and geographic concepts foreign to me, the ideas and ambience remain applicable to daily life and create an afterlife of pure bliss. I would have liked more references to Isis, but perhaps there are very few extant works to translate.

5 out of 5 stars Becoming   April 30, 2007

This has to be one of the most beautiful books I have ever read. It has awakened the Osiris within me and inspired my own becoming.
