Too Preachy November 16, 2008 I am a recently-minted step parent who needed to work out some issues with my stepdaughters. I started looking for books on the subject and read an excerpt from this book on a blog, so I ordered it. I was not prepared for the overly religious tone of the text. Yes, we do go to church each Sunday. But religion is not the overriding factor in our life, as Deal would want it to be for our family. Therefore, I haven't read any further than the first couple of chapters in the book. This would be a good book otherwise, but Deal needs to tone down the Christian angle a bit.
Step Families and Alcoholism February 22, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If we leave a relationship with an alcoholic partner, we often think---"Well I'll never do that again!" But chances are ----a woman who married and divorced an alcoholic will continue to repeat the same patterns she learned in the first alcoholic relationship--- according to Toby Rice Drews author of Getting Them Sober: You Can Help! (Getting Them Sober). The "Smart Step Family" author states a startling statistic---that there is a 74% divorce rate for 2nd marriages with children. Is that startling? Not when we consider that according to the NIH (National Institutes of Health) ------ 50% of all American families have "at least one or two drinking alcoholics in them". To have a happy step family we must FIRST know why we married an alcoholic ---and then learn how to deal with that fact in a very practical way......and the "Getting Them Sober" book gives us hundreds of practical and effective answers that help us on an hourly and daily basis. We don't have to repeat the same mistakes again and again.
Worthwhile February 13, 2008 This book was the best book I've read to date on the subject of Step-Families.
Insightful January 8, 2008 As a pastor of a small church and only experiencing two parent families, I found this book very helpful in appreciating the unique challenges facing stepfamilies. I have used this book for counseling step families and have loaned it to others who have similarly found the book very helpful.
Wise Advice, Practical Help April 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Ron Deal is one of North America's leading experts on stepfamily life. Together with Dr. David and Lisa Frisbie, he is one of only two authors I know of who address blended families from a faith-based perspective. And there are a LOT of faith-based stepfamilies in North America!
This book is revised and updated from a previous edition, which was also good. Very practical help, very clear writing. Most of the challenges you'll face as a stepfamily are addressed here, with wise and down-to-earth advice.
I strongly recommend this for all stepfamilies, especially those who are persons of faith.
Barbara Sheldon, M.S.W. I also highly recommend: Happily Remarried: *Making Decisions Together *Blending Families Successfully* Building a Love That Will Last
